Learn It Like You Want to Speak It

One of the largest gaps to bridge when learning a new language is between what you are taught, and what you need to say. It is entirely possible to develop a very good theoretical or passive understanding of a language, but be unable to speak it spontaneously when the moment comes.

One way this can happen is if you focus on studying topics that don’t directly relate to you. For example, if you don’t plan to cook or go food shopping in the country where they speak your language, memorising endless lists of words like onions, red onions, peppers, plums and pineapples is not going to be that useful.

However, one of the few times when a word might come in handy is if you need to say: ‘I don’t like pineapples.’ In that case, try learning exactly that phrase. That way, you are preparing yourself for a real-life conversational situation, and saving yourself the trouble of having to come up with that construction on the spot. This will make everything flow a lot better.

With every word that you learn, imagine a situation in which you would realistically use it. Think about where you’d be, whom you’d be talking to, and what you’d be saying about it. Then learn that word as part of a phrase you can imagine yourself using.

PREPARE FOR CONVERSATIONS

Write down a list of conversation topics that you would like to be able to talk about. For example: work, family, education, hobbies, travels, food, politics, etc. For each one, make as detailed a mind-map as possible of all the different things you’d like to say about the topic. Then identify which words you already know, and which ones you’ll have to learn to be able to say what you want.
